Information on the Mixed Curling Section at Leaside:

We are a social league.  The season runs from Friday, Sept 24, 2010 to Saturday, Apr 16, 2011 (see calendar on this website).  In August 2010, people can enter teams, partial teams, or ask to be put on a team.  Teams consist of 2 men and 2 women in alternating positions.  As we have 8 flights of 8 teams each (64 teams in total), teams will be tiered based on skill level.  8 end games, (taking about 2 hours) are played weekly, rotating as follows:

Friday at 7 p.m.

Friday at 9 p.m.

Sunday at 1 p.m.

Sunday at 3 p.m.

Within your flight, you will have a round robin (draw) lasting 7 weeks.  Based on the team’s performance, the teams are shuffled between flights (up, down, or the same flight) and we have a second draw of 7 weekly games, and then a third, so 21 league games in total.  We then have a play-off round of 4 games, in which you are guaranteed 2 games.

We recognize the flight winners of each draw, the team with the highest season point total, and the playoff flight winners.  The Flight 1 play-off winner is the overall champion.  We have a closing party/Annual General Meeting (paid for separately and a lot of fun – please try and attend) on the day of the playoff finals, Saturday, April 16, 2011 to celebrate the season.

Additional information for those new to curling:

You need to be available for most of your games.  If you cannot attend, you need to find a spare.  It is possible, but not desirable to play with just 3 of the 4 players.  Games can be rescheduled, but these are hard to arrange.  Do your best to get a spare and let your team know you are going to be away and who the spare is.  To get extra practice and games and help us, join the spare list!

It is customary for the winners of the game to buy the first round of drinks for the losers, and the losers to reciprocate if a second round is desired.  And you get to sit with the team you played for some nice social interaction.  This is a great chance to get to know the other league members.

We will place you on a team with experienced players.  There are clinics before and during the season.  You can contact the mixed drawmaster (mixed.drawmaster @ leasidecurling.ca – remover the blanks) for more help at any time or book time to practice.  Having 2 beginners on a team is possible, but it is even more important to learn the game and practice.  There is a lot to learn – hand signals, types of shots in various situations, where to stand, and what your role is.  But in time and with effort, you will get the hang of the game.  We encourage you to give it a try and join the Mixed Curling Section, and we’ll see you on the ice!
