Update on Labour Disruption (Feb. 1,
2012)
Hi Sunday Night Open Curlers,
With the potential for a labour disruption at the city
looming, I would like to be as clear as possible (given
what we know and what we don’t know) about what will
transpire in the short term.
The main message I have for you is that the Club
may be open for
normally scheduled play even if there is a
lock-out or a strike .
Therefore, it is essential in order to avoid defaulting
a game that you come to the Club prepared to play even
in the event of a confirmed labour disruption.
In short:
-- Assume you are curling, and that the
Club is operational, until you receive official
notification otherwise.
-- Even if you hear on the news "a lockout is on" or "a
strike is on", that does not necessarily
mean the Club is closed. It may well be open for
regular play.
-- Teams are expected to come to the club and be ready
to play unless specifically notified by
the Club (eg. on the LCC website) or by me via this
email address.
-- However, once we are experiencing a labour
disruption, the club may close
without notice. Furthermore, it is recommended that you
take personal belongings (brooms, shoes, etc.) from the
club after each game rather than store them on site (eg.
in your locker).
For updates, please continue to monitor:

Once again, fingers crossed that we don’t have a
disruption of any kind... but please note the above if
we do.
Best,
Steve.
Labour Disruption (January 29, 2012).
Hi Sunday Night Open Curlers,
You
may have heard of the possibility of a labour disruption
at the City of Toronto.
Given that Leaside Curling Club is a city owned
facility, and club staff are City employees, such a
disruption has the potential to affect activities at our
club.
While there is a significant amount of uncertainty
around this issue and its potential effect, the best
thing to do is follow updates from the Club available
at:
http://www.leasidecurling.ca/cityunion.htm
If a disruption interrupts our schedule, your Sunday
Night Open Executive will communicate how we will
accommodate/alter the Draw 3 and Playoff schedules once
we are in a position to know the number of weeks we may
have lost in such a situation.
In the meantime, I know as much as you do by following
the news and the above Club website update link
Let’s keep our fingers crossed!
Thanks,
Steve
The Schedule & Cancelling Games (January 29, 2012).
Hi Sunday Night Open Curlers,
I’m writing to remind everyone about the issue of cancellation of
games and the need to make every effort to maintain
scheduled games
While significant life events do happen (sudden family emergencies,
wide-spread sickness, etc), please remember your full
team’s obligation to make all efforts to maintain the
posted schedule.
-- When feasible, a team must always attempt to play: during the regular
season, only 1 regular member needs to be present and
you may use up to 2 spares. Note,
you must field a minimum of 3 players.
-- A specific Sunday Open spares list is
located on our webpage. A
general Club Spares list is also available along with
member contact telephone numbers/email addresses in the
“membership section” of the LCC main webpage. See: http://www.leasidecurling.ca/private_area_access.htm I
recommend all skips gain a password ahead of time
(instructions are on the website).
-- A cancelled game may well result in a Default-Loss, given the
inconvenience. Curling
is a “scheduled” game. Teams
often find it difficult to do make up games with work,
school, family and other commitments. Sometimes
it’s just too much to ask everyone to add another game
to a busy week in everyone’s lives. The
burden of a cancellation must fall on the Cancelling
team, often in the form of a “default loss”
What to do if you need to cancel a game:
Keeping in mind that urgent situations do arise - and I think we
all understand that “life happens” at various times
(sickness, family emergencies, etc.), cancellation may
be the only option.
In such circumstances, the cancelling team Skip or delegate must:
-- contact the opposing Skip to advise of the cancellation as soon as it is known (best to both telephone
and email).
-- contact me as drawmaster via
email only to advise (1) that the game is cancelled, and (2) who will get the
default win if it is not played ie. who cancelled and
who didn’t.
-- contact the club office at 416-338-4793 to (1) advise them that the sheet is free for other league’s make
up games and (2) to inquire about make up times for our
own game.
-- finally, re-connect with the opposing Skip to offer options on a
potential make up dates & times.
Please remember that ice time for make up games is severely limited
at Leaside.
Just as a final note, one available slot for a make up game is
Sunday at 5.30pm when the Pizza league is not playing. However,
and this is just my opinion, it is quite an
inconvenience to ask for a make up game that will cause
the other team to play 4 consecutive hours on a Sunday.
Thanks for taking the time to understand what to do in the event of
a cancellation.
I hope everyone has enjoyed their games and I wish you all
continued good curling.
Best,
Steve.
